About the area
Lower legs: what the area covers and who it suits
The lower legs run from the knee to the ankle, with the feet added if you want them. This is the most exposed part of your legs: visible in a skirt, shorts, a dress and at the gym, and the part you shave most often.
The area is large and a shave barely lasts a day: by evening it is already prickly. Hence the nicks on the shin and ankle, razor irritation, ingrown hairs and skin dried out by constant shaving. Waxing gets used less here - the area is large and it adds up.
The laser works on the root of the hair: it grows back slower, thinner and sparser, until shaving turns from a daily ritual into a rare formality. The laser does not work on very light or grey hair: there is almost no pigment in it. We look at your hair at the consultation and tell you what to expect.

How many
How many laser hair removal sessions do you need?
Expect 6 to 10 sessions. The lower legs respond well: the hair here is usually dark and grows visibly, which is what the laser needs.
Shins are a predictable area: the hair is dark, responds evenly, and by the sixth session it is usually clear how much is left.

The session
How the session works
The first step is a free consultation. We check your skin, ask about your health and any contraindications, and do a test flash to set a power level that's comfortable for you.
The session itself uses a hybrid laser (alexandrite, diode and neodymium) with contact cooling, which takes the edge off most of the sensation even in delicate areas. The time depends on the area: small zones take around 15 minutes, large ones up to an hour. Your first visit takes a little longer, as it includes the consultation and test flash.
Preparation
How to prepare for your session
Shave the day before or on the day of your visit - not with wax or an epilator: the root has to stay in place. Drop waxing and sugaring 3 to 4 weeks beforehand.
Avoid sun, tanning beds and fake tan for two weeks before your visit. This matters more for legs than for covered areas: in summer they are exposed all day, and on tanned skin we have to lower the power.
The rest is in the preparation article. For shins the section on tanning is the one that matters.

Aftercare
What to do after the session
For a few hours the skin may feel warm and look red, sometimes with small bumps around the follicles - normal, and it settles within a day.
Stay out of strong sun and tanning beds for 1 to 2 weeks, and use SPF on bare legs. Skip the sauna, the pool and scrubs for the first few days.
After a few days the hairs start to shed, which is especially visible on the shins. There is no need to shave them off.

Your schedule
When to book the next session
Regrowth is easy to see on the shins, which helps: it shows when the next session is due, and we keep that schedule with you.
Shins usually run at 4-5 weeks or more, and the gap visibly stretches by mid-course. That is the sign it is working.

Common questions about the lower legs
Can I do this in summer?+
Yes, with one condition: no strong sun or tanning beds for two weeks before and after a session, and SPF on the beach and in town. If a beach holiday is coming up, we plan the course so a session does not clash with the trip.
How many sessions will I need?+
Usually 6 to 10. The lower legs respond well; we will be more precise at the consultation, once we have seen your hair.
Does it hurt?+
The lower leg is easier than the sensitive areas. The front of the shin, where the bone sits close to the skin, is the most sensitive part, but contact cooling takes most of it away.
Are the feet and toes included?+
Toes are priced separately - mention it at the consultation and we will add them to the same visit, no second appointment needed.
