How often to do laser hair removal

Spoiler: your body already has the perfect calendar - your hair growth. Why the gap grows and how to know it is time to book.

MEDULLA team

Your body tells you when it is time for the next session: regrown hair is your calendar. The first three sessions usually run 4-5 weeks apart, then hair growth slows down and the gap between sessions gets longer. In 7 years we have done more than 3500 treatments and we know for sure: the right rhythm of the course matters for the result just as much as the laser itself!

Why everything depends on the hair growth phase

Every hair lives through its own cycle of three phases. Active growth (anagen): the hair grows, the root sits deep in the follicle and is full of pigment. Transition (catagen): growth stops and the hair separates from the root, this takes a few weeks. Rest (telogen): the hair sits in the skin with no connection to the follicle, then falls out, and the follicle rests for a few weeks to a few months before it starts a new hair.

The laser works only in the active growth phase. Light heats the pigment in the root, and the heat destroys the follicle. In the resting phase there is no connection to the root, and the flash does nothing. At any moment only some of the hairs in an area are in the active phase, the rest are asleep. That is why one session cannot remove everything, and between sessions you wait for the sleeping hairs to wake up and reach the surface. Why hair "grows" between sessions and when that is a good sign: why is hair still growing after laser hair removal?.

How the gap changes over the course

The first three sessions run 4-5 weeks apart: there is a lot of hair, it grows actively, and every session removes a noticeable share. After each session you see the difference: less hair, thinner and lighter.

Then growth slows down. The remaining follicles wake up less often, and the gap stretches to 6-8 weeks. On the last sessions of the course the pause reaches 10-12 weeks or more. That is a good sign: the longer you wait for new hair, the closer you are to the end of the course!

The rule of thumb is simple. While hair regrows 3-4 weeks after a session, you come often. Once new growth appears only after 6-8 weeks, we extend the gap. We track this at every visit and tell you ourselves when to book the next one.

How to know it is time to book

Look at the whole area. If new hair has regrown evenly across it, the hair is in the active phase and this is the best moment for a session. If only a few single hairs have appeared in a couple of spots, wait another 1-2 weeks: the rest will come through, and one flash will catch them all at once.

You can shave regrown hair between sessions, but wax, sugaring and tweezers are off limits for the whole course: they pull out the root, and at the next visit the laser will have nothing to destroy.

Does the rhythm depend on the area

Yes. On the face, neck and upper lip hair grows faster, so visits are more frequent there. Underarms and bikini run at a medium pace. Legs and arms grow slowest of all, so the pause there gets longer from mid-course.

If you treat several areas at once, we set a shared rhythm so you do not travel to us for each area separately. Usually it works out as one visit for all areas together.

If your schedule slips

Hair has growth phases, and during the course the key is to catch the active one. After a long pause, the hairs we could have removed slip into the resting phase, and we miss that moment. Destroyed follicles do not recover on their own, so the result of your previous sessions stays with you.

Nothing terrible happens, but the course will need a few more sessions: the missed hairs have to be caught in the next growth cycle. If your schedule slipped by a week or two, nothing is lost; if it slipped by several months, come as soon as you can and we continue from where we stopped. What a break of each length changes, and whether you have to start over, is covered in what happens if you skip a laser session.

How long the whole course takes

A course of 6-10 sessions with growing gaps takes from 8 months to a year and a half. In the first months you come every 4-5 weeks, then visits become rare. It cannot go faster with us or anywhere else: the hair has to regrow, and that is biology, not a laser setting.

Plan your start in advance. If you want smooth legs for summer, you need to start in autumn or at the very beginning of winter. Bikini and underarms can be done all year round, the sun hardly reaches them.

Maintenance sessions after the course

After a full course the hair stays away for a long time, but almost everyone needs 1-2 maintenance sessions a year. Hormones, pregnancy, some medications and even heavy stress wake up individual sleeping follicles. These are single hairs, not everything coming back, and one flash every six months to a year keeps the skin smooth.

There is no strict schedule here: come when you notice new hairs. A maintenance session before they appear is pointless, the laser would again have nothing to act on.

How we run the course

Our specialists guide you through the whole course: at every visit we check how much hair has regrown and how fast, and set the next date from that. You do not need to count the weeks yourself, we tell you when it is time. We work on a hybrid laser (alexandrite, diode and neodymium) with contact cooling, so the first and the tenth session are both comfortable. The first visit starts with a free consultation, where together we plan the whole course.

Common questions

Can I come for laser hair removal every 2-3 weeks?+

No. New hair has not yet come out of the resting phase, and the laser has nothing to act on. The first sessions usually run 4-5 weeks apart, and after that the gap only grows.

Why do the gaps get longer towards the end of the course?+

Few follicles are left, and they wake up less often. New hair appears after 10-12 weeks instead of 3-4, so sessions are needed less often. It is a sign the course is working.

How long does a full laser hair removal course take?+

From 8 months to a year and a half for 6-10 sessions. The first sessions every 4-5 weeks, later every 8-12 weeks.

How often are maintenance sessions needed?+

Usually 1-2 times a year, when you notice a few new hairs. Before they appear, a maintenance session is not needed.

Can I come more often if my hair grows back quickly?+

The interval follows the growth phase. While hair comes back 3-4 weeks after a session, we keep the gap short; once new growth takes 6-8 weeks, we extend it. The specialist checks this at every visit.
