Neither the American Academy of Dermatology nor Cleveland Clinic gives a deadline in days. AAD writes that the usual reaction after a laser lasts one to three days. Cleveland Clinic writes that you should normally be able to go back to your usual activities right away; intimacy is not mentioned there at all.
So there is one thing to go by: the state of the skin. After a bikini session it stays more sensitive than usual for a couple of days, and friction over hot reddened skin is uncomfortable and can make irritation worse. Below are the signs that the area has settled, what reduces friction and when it is worth messaging us.

What happens to the skin in the first days
AAD describes the reaction like this: redness and swelling that often look like a mild sunburn. The most common side effects are minor and last one to three days. Cleveland Clinic adds that the skin may be red, swollen and a little painful, and allows a cold compress.
In the bikini area something is added that legs do not have: the area is covered by underwear, it is warmer and damper there, the skin is thinner. The same reaction is therefore felt more strongly, and friction is harder to take.

Signs the area is fine
The easiest check is underwear: if loose underwear is not noticeable, move on to the other signs.
- The area is no warmer to the touch than the skin around it.
- Loose underwear is not noticeable during the day.
- Touch does not sting.
- The skin is intact: no blisters, crusts or weeping.
What reduces friction
Friction is the main irritant right now, and the laser unit leaflet from Leeds Teaching Hospitals advises avoiding tight clothing, friction and scratching of the treated area. That is a hospital leaflet for medical lasers and its limits are stricter than ours: we take the friction advice and the threshold for getting in touch from it, while our own aftercare is described in a separate article.
- Loose cotton underwear instead of tight synthetic kinds.
- A water-based lubricant.
- A cool shower afterwards, without hot water or a washcloth. Pat the skin dry with a soft towel.
- Nothing with alcohol, fragrance or acids on the treated area.

Irritation and bumps afterwards
Small red bumps in the bikini area are common after a session, and intimacy usually has nothing to do with them: that is how the follicle reacts to heat. Friction on top makes the reaction more noticeable; it does not turn it into a complication.
Give the area a rest: a cool shower, loose underwear, a thin layer of panthenol. A hot bath, the pool, a sauna and sport with heavy friction can wait for now - these are the same first two days we mention to everyone after a session. If the bumps have pus in them and last longer, look at the article on folliculitis: it explains how that differs from ordinary irritation.
When to message us
Message us if you see any of this. The three-day threshold comes from the laser unit leaflet at Leeds Teaching Hospitals; blistering and infection are listed by AAD among the possible complications.
- Swelling lasts longer than three days.
- Blisters, crusts or weeping appeared.
- The pain is getting stronger over time.
- You have a temperature or the area feels hot to the touch.

If the area is not the bikini line
For underarms, legs, face and back the question answers itself: there is no direct friction and no covered damp environment. The general rules for the first two days apply - no sauna, pool, hot bath or sport with heavy friction. Details in aftercare for laser hair removal.
How we do it here
We split the bikini area into three: the bikini line, the full bikini and Hollywood. The larger the surface, the stronger the reaction in the first days, and the more sense it makes to give the skin time to settle.
We work with a hybrid laser with contact cooling, alexandrite, diode and neodymium. The cooling takes part of the heat away during the session itself.
At the consultation and after the session we answer questions like this without any awkwardness - people ask them all the time. If something does not look right, message us on WhatsApp and describe what you see.
