Can you get laser hair removal on your period?

Yes, it is not a contraindication. What changes in sensitivity, how bikini works with a tampon and when it is better to move the visit.

MEDULLA team

You can have laser hair removal on your period: it is not a contraindication, the cycle does not affect the result and the laser does not affect the cycle. One thing changes: in the first days the skin is more sensitive, and the same flash feels stronger, especially in the bikini area. Legs, arms, underarms and face are done without restrictions, bikini with a tampon or a cup, and if it is really uncomfortable, the visit is simply moved a couple of days.

What changes during your period

Hormones at the start of the cycle lower the pain threshold, and that shows on any treatment, from a manicure to laser. The flash is the same, the power is the same, but it feels a point or two stronger. It is most noticeable in the first two days and in the bikini area. The skin may be slightly more swollen and stay red longer than usual on those days, but it settles the same way, within a few hours.

The result itself is not affected: a hair in the growth phase stays in the growth phase, and the follicle is destroyed the same way. There is no need to move a session for the sake of the effect, only for comfort. How a full bikini differs from Hollywood and where the borders run: Brazilian vs Hollywood laser hair removal.

Bikini and deep bikini

It can be done, with a tampon or a menstrual cup. The specialist works on the skin, not inside, and does not touch mucous membranes. Hygiene in the room does not suffer: disposable materials, the handpiece disinfected after every client, everything as usual. The one thing worth thinking about in advance is your comfort: if the bikini area hurts even from a razor in the first days, it is better to book for the end of your period or right after.

If a session lands on day one or two and you would rather not, say so in advance and the visit is moved. If you are fine with it, the specialist lowers the power in the most sensitive spots, and the result does not suffer.

Legs, arms, underarms, face

Nothing special. Sensitivity is slightly higher, but on these areas it is low anyway, and most people notice no difference. The session runs as usual.

When it is best to book

The calmest days for sensitive areas: right after your period ends and up to mid-cycle. If you are planning a course of 6-10 sessions 4-5 weeks or more apart, the sessions will land on different phases anyway, and fitting all of them to the cycle is not possible. It is simpler not to try: keep the course schedule, and move a bikini session in the first two days if it is uncomfortable.

A late period and other things to tell the specialist

If your period is late, rule out pregnancy first: laser hair removal is not done during pregnancy, there are no safety studies. A test before the visit settles the question. Heavy and painful periods, endometriosis and painkillers do not affect the treatment, but it is worth telling the specialist so they can set the power and pace.

How we handle it

We do not ask about your cycle when you book and do not move the visit ourselves: you decide. If the bikini area is painful for you on those days, message us and we move the session a couple of days without losing your place in the schedule. We work on a hybrid laser with contact cooling, so even on sensitive days the treatment is comfortable!

Common questions

Can I have bikini laser hair removal on my period?+

Yes, with a tampon or a menstrual cup. The skin is more sensitive in the first days, so if you prefer, the session is moved to the end of your period or right after.

Does my period affect the result of laser hair removal?+

No. The hair growth phase and the destruction of the follicle do not depend on the cycle. Only sensitivity changes.

Can I have laser on my legs and underarms on my period?+

Yes, without restrictions. Sensitivity on these areas is low, and most people notice no difference.

When in the cycle is it best to have laser?+

Calmest right after your period and up to mid-cycle. But there is no need to fit the whole course to the cycle, keeping the gap between sessions matters more.

Can I have laser if my period is late?+

Rule out pregnancy with a test first: laser hair removal is not done during pregnancy. If the test is negative, there are no restrictions.
